Columbia,
South
Carolina, located where three rivers meet, keeps as its
motto, "Where Friendliness Flows". The southern
hospitality of Columbia's citizens and the general beauty of
the city itself create a unique ambience of warmth and
geniality. The Partnership
for Livable Communities voted Columbia one of the top 30
Most Livable Cities.
Serving as the state capitol of South
Carolina, Columbia originally spread over two counties, Lexington
and Richland.
With rapid growth in the last few decades, the Greater
Columbia Metro Region now extends into Calhoun,
Kershaw,
Saluda
and Fairfield
counties. According to Census
2000 data, the population of Columbia City stood at
116,278. South Carolina's 2002 census estimate for the Metro
Area was 664,229. Columbia citizens donated an initial 1,200
acres of city land for the building of Fort
Jackson, which today is America's
largest Army training base, and an important factor in
Columbia's flourishing economy.
Located in South Carolina's lovely Midlands
Region, an area ideal for outdoor recreation, Columbia
residents delight in mild winters with temperatures
averaging in the 50's and only occasional freezes. Spring
and autumn bring enchantment to the eye with early blooming
flowers, awesome fall colors, and comfortably warm
temperatures. The months of July and August can average in
the low 90's. Columbians flock to nearby Lake Murray,
covering 78 square miles, and the Broad,
Saluda
and the Congaree
Rivers to cool off and swim, fish and boat. Paddler
Magazine voted Columbia among the top 10 canoe towns in
the U.S.A.
Columbia was one of America's first planned communities.
Due to the proximity of the Congaree
National Park, a protected floodplain with old-growth
stands of hardwood trees, and during the wet season, a
swamp, Columbia planners laid out a city of very broad
streets. Lots were large and far apart, due to the belief
that the disease carrying swamp mosquitoes could not fly
more than 60 feet before they'd die of starvation. While
that didn't prove true, it created a city unique for its
time, founded in 1786. Today, lovely greenbelts divide
Columbia's wide roadways, with seasonal flowers planted
throughout. Hiking and biking paths wind through these,
creating a city of rare beauty. Twelve distinct neighborhoods
make up Columbia proper, each with its own association for
keeping the city clean and attractive.
Columbia plays hosts to numerous events
and festivals. Held here are the South
Carolina State Fair, the Three Rivers Music Festival,
road races and numerous ethnic festivals. The Riverbanks
Zoo and Botanical Gardens, one of the nation's top 10
zoos, draws international attention. A city of refined
culture, Columbia supports numerous music
and dance troupes. It boasts its own philharmonic
orchestra, ballet, and jazz company, as well as numerous theater
groups. Eight museums
preserve the past and enlighten young minds for the future.
Like much of South
Carolina, Columbians remain proud of the past and
safeguard its memories. Seven historic
districts grace Columbia. Home to six major colleges
and universities, Columbia also ensures its residents a
prosperous future.
Columbia,
SC offers a temperate climate and an enviable quality of
life. With a population known for its friendliness and
Southern hospitality, Columbia welcomes all visitors and
